Dead baby washed ashore in Accra flood

The lifeless body of the poor baby girl

The aftermath of the heavy flooding on Tuesday night washed ashore a premature dead baby, which was discovered in the wee hours of Wednesday on a pavement at the Adabraka Official Town.

The lifeless body was carried water flowing from the direction of the Odaw River and left on a pavement close to a popular joint called Aponkye Spot in Adabraka.

The dead baby, believed to be female, had the umbilical cord tied to its waist with its tiny legs crossed, while its feeble hairy hands folded across the lower section of the face, as if she was praying.

It is believed to have been aborted and dumped in the flood by its mother, who is yet unknown.

An eyewitness, Collins Oppong tells Adom News many passersby stood in awe as they took glances at the deserted dead baby, believed to be female.

He said some onlookers took pictures of the scene with their phones and other devices, and others grouped and discussed the bizarre incident.

Oppong spoke to one fruit hawker called Naaley, who said “it’s painful, the baby is almost developed and the mother just perhaps aborted it, it is a big sin in the eyes of God. I know she would not be privileged to conceive another baby, I swear.”

Another bystander, Robert, a resident of Adabraka, said he had been a witness to several remains after floods occur in the vicinity, but the scene of the dead baby came to him as big surprise.

“I have never seen anything like this when the area gets flooded; we see debris of all kinds, but never for once did I see a dead baby till today. I am so shocked!” he exclaimed saying, “It is painful how the fate of an unborn baby could end in such terrible manner.”

Andy, a father of a two-month old baby who chanced on the incident confided that if he knew a scene as horrible as that laid in his direction, he would have taken a different route.

“I’m sad and very disturbed, as a young father I feel a great concern for this baby,” he noted, saying “this scene would definitely take a toll on me today and the days ahead.”

Oppong said he reported to the Adabraka Police and to the Assembly woman of the area.

When Adom News reached the police, they confirmed the report but said when they got to the scene the lifeless body of the baby was gone.

Reports say one Adelaide Planch took it upon herself to bury the body at Awodome Cemetary.
