Court sentences armed robber to 70 years imprisonment

A Kumasi Circuit Court, presided over by Justice William Boampong, has ordered a 21-year old robber to be kept in prison custody for 70 years.

Shamuna Bawa had robbed a second hand footwear dealer of her cash of GH¢1,107.00 and a Samsung cellular phone at gun point at Yennyawoso in Kumasi.

The victim, Beatrice Amoah, had gone to the roadside as had been her routine to catch a commercial vehicle to the Central Market to carry out her business, when the convict attacked her.

He was charged with illegal possession of firearm and robbery but pleaded not guilty.

Police Inspector Kwabena Oduro-Boateng told the court that the crime was committed on January 8, at about 0430 hours.

He said as Beatrice waited for a bus to arrive, Bawa suddenly emerged pulled out a gun, gagged and dragged her to an obscure place.

There, he instructed that she surrendered the money on her and other valuables then he forcibly seized an amount of GH¢1,107.00 she was carrying in her handbag and a cellular phone.

Bawa then made her to lie prostrate and escaped with the stolen money and phone.

Beatrice sought police assistance and the convict was arrested not far from the crime scene.

A search conducted on him uncovered a locally manufactured pistol, three live cartridges, the stolen phone and a cash of GH¢390.00.
