Peter Jones – British High Commissioner to Ghana
Mr. Peter Jones, British High Commissioner in Ghana, has said the UK would support Ghana to ensure a peaceful election next week.
He said Ghana had gained recognition and international favour because of its democratic credentials and is optimistic that the citizens would not do anything odd to ruin the peace.
Mr Jones said this when he paid a courtesy on Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo on Wednesday.
He was accompanied by Mr Henry Donati, Aid Effectiveness and Strategy Manager of Department for International Development (DFID) and Phidelia Amey, political officer at the Commission.
Mr Jones said the High Commission had provided the police with equipment and logistics and organised training on the electoral processes to make them abreast with electoral laws.
He said the Commission was in consultation with the London Metropolitan Police to explore the possibility of deploying some personnel from London to observe and support the police in the elections.
Mr Nyamekye-Marfo said the government would not allow or tolerate any individual or group whose activities could create confusion and set back the pace of development.
He commended Britain for its support for Ghana and said the government was committed and ready to ensure stability during and beyond Election 2012.
