Jerry Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has counselled  political parties and their supporters to ensure responsible conduct and end the trading in baseless and abusive language as the nation edged towards the December 7 general elections.

He expressed discomfort with what he said was the high level of tension that had characterized the electoral process and called for moderation and the application of logic in the political discourse, saying that “the recklessness must stop”.

Former President Rawlings was speaking at a meeting held with all the eight presidential candidates by the National Peace Council (NPC), acting together with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and with technical support from the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.

It provided a forum for them to make a stand against electoral violence and calm the anxiety among sections of the population.

Former President Rawlings said Ghana had come very far in its political evolution and should not “allow the remaining few days to destroy the progress made.”

He noted that there was real tension in some parts of the country and said the peace must not be taken for granted.

He urged the security agencies to be professional, forthright and impartial in the performance of their duties.
