‘I’ll Create Ministry For Social Protection Programmes’- Prez Mahama

President John Mahama has revealed that he will create a new ministry to effectively coordinate all social protection programmes in the various ministries in the second term of his administration.

“I am going to move all the social protection programmes in the various ministries and bring them into one ministry,” he said.

In an address to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science Technology (KNUST), the President said, “for me, my belief is in social democracy. I believe that the fruit of growth of every economy should be equitably shared down the class chain.”

“I don’t believe that by making one class of people rich, it is going to trickle down to the poor. I think that if we are growing this economy, we must make sure that we take the poor and vulnerable with us.”

President Mahama further disclosed, “one of the strong points of my government is going to be that social protection programmes. Now we have all kinds of social programmes in different ministries; we have the Youth Employment in Youth and Sports and LESDEP in Local Government”.

“We will be able to harmonize them better by bringing them all together so that we are able to monitor and evaluate and make sure that they are having the impact that we intend them to have,” he added.
