Security agents were on Thursday deployed in Bichi, Kano State as youths on Thursday burnt houses and shops reportedly belonging to Christians over an alleged blasphemous comment by an Igbo tailor.
Witnesses said the tailor mis-pronounced an Hausa word for a popular garment and rumourmongers swiftly went round the town, saying he had uttered a blasphemous term.
Jobless youths swiftly mobilised and burnt houses and shops belonging to Christians, especially Southerners, African Outlook reports.
It could not be determined if there were any casualties in the violence in the town, which is several kilometres away from Kano.
The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Idris, and the Joint Task Force in the state swiftly deployed policemen and soldiers in Bichi in over 50 vehicles to quell the violence.
Residents were forced to stay indoors as security agents fired several canisters of teargas.
More details later.
