Cape Town – The National Assembly on Thursday unanimously approved the appointment of Kevin Malunga, the law adviser and spokesperson for the Farlam Commission, as deputy public protector.

Malunga, 39, will replace Mamiki Shai, whose term expires at the end of November.

The Johannesburg-based advocate was one of four candidates interviewed for the post by the portfolio committee on justice.

All parties favoured him, despite his past criticism of the Democratic Alliance for readily taking government decisions on court review.

Malunga told the committee he hated corruption and maladministration with a passion, and said he would investigate anybody regardless of their position, even the president.

“It is not a popular mandate, regardless of who you investigate.”

Malunga served as a senior adviser in the office of former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo after lecturing in law at the universities of Natal and the Witwatersrand.

His background also includes working on an ANC policy document that advocated a mixed electoral model.
