A national training programme for motor riders attached to the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) has commenced in Accra to bolster their preparedness to ensure smooth, peaceful and successful elections.
About 103 police motor riders in the country are attending the four-day workshop dubbed, ‘Ethics, integrity and professionalism for policy police motor riders.’
Participants would be taken through some shooting practicals, orientation on police communication systems, use of fire arms, among others.
At the opening ceremony yesterday, ACP Awuni Angwubutuge, the commanding officer in charge of MTTU, said participants would be adequately trained to ensure safety during the elections.
They would also be taken through the use of fire arms since they would be given guns to clamp down on the activities of recalcitrant persons who would want to steal ballot boxes during the period.
Those voters, who would also arm themselves with weapons when coming to vote will also be checked, he said.
The police boss noted that government had presented 130 motor bikes to his outfit to be used during the election period.
He urged the participants to be on the lookout for unregistered motorbikes, adding that those people are mostly thieves and armed robbers.
Participants were advised not to use their guns and motorbikes to intimidate innocent citizens.
For his part, the Head of Research and Education at MTTU, ASP Alexander Obeng urged police personnel not to sit aloof and allow disgruntled police officers to flout the laws.
He said the training programme would help the participants to prevent recalcitrant individuals from committing crimes during the election period.
“People who will also sit in the buckets of pickups will also be prevented,” he added.
