Bauchi rejects 6-zone structure

Bauchi—Bauchi State government has opposed the recognition of the six geo-political zones in the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

State Deputy Governor, Aminu Saleh, who made this known, yesterday, while presenting a paper at a zonal public hearing on the constitution amendment in Gombe, said: “As a state government, we are against the autonomy of geo-political zones as tiers of government, likewise the abolition of state Independent Electoral Commission and the establishment of State Police.”

Saleh, however, expressed support for the public hearing, saying it was aimed at accommodating diverse interests of the various sections of the country, as the ultimate objective of the exercise is to have a workable document that would consolidate the nation’s democracy through good governance.
