The presidential candidate for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, who had just started a three-day tour of some parts of the Eastern Region, called off his campaign tour yesterday after news of the death of the former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama got to him at Anyinam, which was the first port of call.
He was expected to go to Nkawkaw, New Abirem and Begoro but returned to Accra immediately the sad news got to him.
He was seen so disturbed as he briefed journalists on his tour about the need to return to Accra and commiserate with the family members.
He expressed his profound sadness at the news adding that he was at his bedside at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital three days ago to wish him well and never expected him to die so early.
“It was our wish that our brother Alhaji Aliu Mahama lived to see the NPP win power again but God knows the best,” Nana said, amidst grief.
Nana Akufo-Addo described the former Vice President as an outstanding man who served his country well.
“It is a sad news personally for me because we have been close to each other as colleagues and allies,” he stated.
He noted that Alhaji Mahama contributed greatly to the cause of the NPP and also distinguished himself as a Vice President.
“I wish to personally convey my condolences to his wife, Hajia Ramatu Mahama and the family as well as former President Kufuor,” he said.
