Aliu Mahama Dead: Burial to take place in Yendi

Late Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Aliu Mahama is to be buried in his hometown, the Northern Regional town of Yendi. 

The decision was arrived at after a meeting between leading members of late Vice President’s family and representatives of government. 

The Asomdwe Memorial Park was scheduled to be the final resting place of Alhaji Aliu Mahama but after careful consideration of the concerns of late statesman’s family, Yendi was concluded on. 

In an interview with the official spokesperson of the family, Alhaji Rahman Gomda, Citi News gathered that the body will be airlifted to Tamale for burial after a funeral ceremony at the forecourt of the Statehouse. 

He pointed out that it was necessary for the family to be allowed to pay their final respects to the late Vice President in a befitting manner. 

The funeral ceremony will take place at midday on Sunday, November 18. 

Alhaji Aliu Mahama died in the early hours of Friday, November 16, 2012 after suffering a stroke, a fact confirmed by former President John Kufuor in an interview with Citi News.

His passing was confirmed by Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Otu Nartey, in a press statement. According to Prof. Nartey’s statement, he died at 9:45am at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital at the age of 66.

His death came barely three days after media reports wrongfully pronounced him dead, a situation which was debunked and thus sparked a heated controversy between the media and his family members.
