Egypt: Morsi Listened to NCW’s View On Constitutional Articles On Women

Head of the National Council for Women (NCW) Mervat el-Talawy said on Tuesday 13/11/2012 that President Mohamed Morsi stressed, during his meeting with feminist leaders, the importance of reaching a consensus on the articles related to women in the constitution.

The NCW wants to remove article 221 which may open the door to hard line fundamentalist interpretations of Islamic Sharia, Talawy said.

The constitution should state commitment to international agreements signed by Egypt on women rights, she underlined.

She said the talks with the President covered women equal economic, political and social rights.
