Pastor Otabil to speak on Free SHS policy Monday

Pastor Mensah Otabil

Pastor Mensa Otabil, the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has announced he would clear the air about the hullabaloo surrounding his comments on free education and make his stand on free SHS clear.

The policy has been the heart of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s platform in the 2012 general elections.

Pastor Mensa Otabil was recently dragged into the political arena following the circulation of recording of a sermon he delivered in which he questioned the feasibility and wisdom of free SHS.

Though Pastor Otabil has yet to weigh in on the debate following the furor caused by his recording, an Associate Pastor of ICGC named Rev. Kofi Okyere announced that the contents of the recording are part of an address that Otabil delivered between 6 and 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, Pastor Otabil himself is expected to address the media on Monday morning to set the record straight on his views about free SHS.

He announced this to his congregation on Sunday, November 11, 2012, adding that when his name is in the news, he usually lets the publicity blow over naturally, but that this time he feels compelled to speak out.

Rev. Kofi Okyere, who confirmed Monday’s press conference to Joy News, said, “Dr. Otabil would be speaking to the issue that has been leveled against him and to clear the air.”

He noted that even though the church issued press release to address the pastor’s comments, public attacks against “his image and his reputation” persist.

Rev. Okyere explained, “this is a follow up to the press release; it looks like it has not answered many of the questions [for] those who put out the voice….And he wants to clear the air so that his reputation is not stained.”
