The invasion of millipedes in maize and cassava farms in the Wassa East District of the Western Region is threatening human life and food security in the area.

According to a local chief farmer in the district, Mr. Samuel Sarpong, the pests invaded farm lands in the area about eight years ago but have increased in number over the last two years.

They are reported to be red and black species that could feed on human blood and that had forced farmers in the affected communities to abandon their homes to stay with relatives in the district capital, Daboase.

Mr. Sarpong made the disclosure at this year’s District Farmers Day celebration at Daboase in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.

Some of the communities affected by the invasion include Afekyekrom, Okete and Adams camp.

According to the District Director of Agriculture, Madam Elizabeth Brenya, her outfit had tried fruitlessly to eradicate the animals from affected farms and had therefore petitioned the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for assistance.
