Johannesburg – Two men were arrested in Edenvale on Friday for illegal possession of perlemoen (abalone) worth R1.5 million, Gauteng police said.

Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said police were on routine patrol when they flagged down a bakkie driven by a Chinese national.

“When he was questioned regarding the cargo, he became very cagey. The members then searched the vehicle and found dried abalone at the back of the bakkie,” she said.

He was arrested and while he was being booked a friend of his arrived and talked to the arresting officer.

“The friend, also a Chinese national, offered the member R10,000 to make the whole case disappear.”

The second man was then also arrested and in his possession police found R30.000.

“Both suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of illegal possession of abalone and bribery respectively,” Mogale said. – Sapa
