Uganda: Police Block Asset Transfer By Pension Scam Suspects

The Police have moved to block any transfer of property belonging to suspects implicated in the pensions scam and the companies linked to them.

A letter dated November 5, which was addressed to the commissioner of the Uganda Revenue Authority, states that the Police is investigating allegations of illicit accumulation of wealth by the officials accused of conspiring to create 1,018 ghost pensioners, to whom sh63b was irregularly paid to their bank accounts.

“The purpose of this letter is to request you to halt any transfer of property in the names of the under-listed persons and or companies,” the letter reads.

The Police also requested for other details on the suspects’ unknown property.

“We also request you to give us a list of property in their names or companies,” the letter read.

The suspects are Jimmy Lwamafa (permanent secretary), Steven Kiwanuka Kunsa (director of research and development), Obey Christopher (principal accountant), David Oloka (assistant senior accountant in charge of pensions), Joan Nantwenda (principal personnel officer), Steven Lwanga and Fred Tumusime.

Ten companies are suspected to be owned by or linked to the suspects. The Police want the lands ministry to halt any transfers of the property.

Meanwhile, sources said Oloka who was arrested on Monday, reportedly fainted while being interrogated on Wednesday. He was taken to Mulago Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
