Terrified Thieves Give Themselves Away

Two suspected thieves gave themselves away when they instantly dropped their two sacks full of booty and took to their heels at the busy Kejetia lorry park upon seeing some police personnel who were minding their own business at the time.

As the policemen headed in the direction of the suspected thieves, the latter took a quick glance at each other and suddenly dropped the heavy loads and took to their heels.

The strange action by the suspects then attracted the attention of the policemen, who chased the suspects – a middle-aged male and female. The police were unable to arrest the suspects as they faded into the milling crowd at Kejetia.

When the two sacks were opened by the police, one had assorted wax prints and the other assorted new ladies’ lingerie, shirts, sandals and slippers.

The Ashanti Regional Police Operations commander, DSP Julius Kpebbeson, who briefed this paper in Kumasi on Tuesday, said his outfit is still trying to arrest the suspects.

Meanwhile, he appealed to anyone who might have lost such items to come and identify them.

According to him, the police are determined to ensure peace before, during and after the elections and have been implementing various plans to achieve that target. One of the plans, he said, had been to deploy personnel on foot patrols, particularly in the central business district of the city.

It was during such rounds at about 11.45am last Wednesday that the suspected thieves saw the policemen at Kejetia, abandoned their booty and escaped.

In another development, concurrent swoops that the police carried out in various police districts in the Kumasi City between last Friday and Sunday resulted in the rounding up of a total of 104 suspects.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyenning, at a news briefing, said the suspects were arrested from known criminal joints, including Obonsam Gyam at Asafo, Bantama and Mamponteng.
