Mr Arvinder Singh, Chief Operations Officer of Melcom Group of Companies, said the company rented the building that housed its shopping centre at Achimota, Accra, to undertake business and that it was not originally constructed by Melcom.

Briefing Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur during his visit to the disaster scene on Wednesday, Mr Singh said his priority at the moment was to ensure that those trapped in the collapsed structure were rescued as quickly as possible.

Dr Alfred Vanderpuye, Chief Executive of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), however, asked Mr Singh to furnish the AMA with documents covering the building to help in investigations.

Mr Albert Brown Gaisie, Director of Operations of the Ghana National Fire Service, appealed to onlookers to cooperate with the rescue team to enable them to efficiently carry out its duty.

At least one person is reported dead, while an unknown number of persons are feared trapped under rubble when the building collapsed on Wednesday.

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, who went to the site on Wednesday, has declared the collapse of the building a national disaster.
