US election: Obama edges Romney

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama edged Republican challenger Mitt Romney in Virginia on Tuesday as part of his re-election triumph, US television networks projected.

The state loomed large in the hard-fought presidential race and Romney’s campaign had invested heavily trying to push Virginia back in the Republican column.

But Obama’s well-oiled campaign organization, and changing demographics, helped the president prevail once again, after he won Virginia in the 2008 race.

US television networks have projected results in all states except Florida, where the race remained tight, and Alaska.
