East Africa: Ombachi Earns Kenya Draw Against England

Kenya’s Dennis Ombachi scored a last minute to earn the country 14-14 draw against England in Australia.

Nairobi — Dennis Ombachi scored a last minute converted tie to earn Kenya 14-14 draw against England in thier Gold Coast 7s opener in Australia on Saturday.

Mike Friday first World Series tie in charge of the Kenyan side came against the side that he coached until 2006 and he would not have wished for a worse start as the English raced to a 14-0 half time lead.

It took five minutes for Dan Norton to breach the Kenyan rear giard for the first try of the tournament before Chris Brightwell scored their second converted try extending the lead to 14-0 at the break.

However, the second half saw Kenya strike back early through debutant Davis Chenge and trail 14-7 with five minutes to go before Ombachi, a star of the Safaricom Sevens where he was named the best player, got into the act in virtually the closing seconds.

Ombachi launched into a thrilling 50m solo run that took him to the whitewash to on the left side to draw the match 14-14.

Group C rivals Samoa had Lio Lolo score two tries tp set up a 31-10 victory over Spain with Kenya next up.

Lolo emulated Ombachi with a 50m dash for the tryline to post Samoa’s first try of the tournament before Tom Losefo crossed for their second try with the conversion is successful on this occasion for a 12-0.

Spain hit back through Facundo Lavino and trail 12-5 at the breather.
