McFly bassist Dougie Poynter revealed he attempted suicide as he struggled to overcome his battle with drink and drugs.

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! winner, 24, admitted he attempted to end his life in a fume-filled car in February 2011 – just before he entered rehab.

The singer had spent months battling drink and drugs and had split from Saturdays girlfriend Frankie Sandford a few months before his suicide attempt.

Fortunately, Dougie decided to seek help and spent a month in The Priory, and has been clean and sober ever since.

Speaking about the harrowing time during a record for Alan Carr’s Chatty Man show, Dougie’s revelations drew gasps from the audience, reports the Daily Mirror.

Dougie and his bandmates were on the Channel 4 show to promote their autobiography Unsaid Things… Our Story.

Having read a preview copy of the book, Alan said he was sad to read about Dougie’s past demons.

Alan said: ‘Listen, I have got to say, it got really dark, about you trying to kill yourself?’

After Dougie replied ‘yeah’, he went on to say: ‘It’s always good to reflect on that sort of stuff. I’m in a really, really good place now. It is quite easy to forget.

‘It’s

into how dark it can get if you take your foot off the gas and stop
looking after yourself.’

Bandmate Harry Judd, who won Strictly Come Dancing last year, added: ‘Half the time you didn’t know what you were doing – it was us telling you.’

Frontman Tom Fletcher, who appeared in Wednesday’s episode of The Only Way Is Essex, said: ‘We are all in good places now. Dougie has sorted himself out and I am married.’
