Martins scores winner in Valencia derby

Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins

Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins scored the winner for Levante as they edged rivals Valencia 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

This was the 27-year-old’s second goal in three appearances for the Granotes following his winner on his debut in a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

The former Newcastle United striker collected a long pass from goalkeeper Gustavo Munua before rifling the ball into the back of the net, and he says the move was not a fluke.

“Munúa and I talked about this move at training,” said Martins. “He tells me to make the runs and that he will pick me up. He is a very good distributor of the ball.

Although Levante are currently sitting in 11th place on the La Liga table, Martins says he is enjoying th start of his spell with the club and looking forward to scoring more goals.

“I’m very happy here at Levante and I’m looking forward to making many people happy,” he said.

“These three points are very important to us; we have shown that we can beat Valencia and we did.”

Elsewhere, Moroccan forward Youssef El-Arabi netted from the penalty spot to help Granada secure a 2-1 win over Mallorca, his first goal of the season after seven appearances.

Ivorian midfielder Christian Koffi-Ndri, known as Romaric, will serve a two-match suspension after he was shown a red card in the 9th minute as Real Zaragoza went on to lose 1-0 to Getafe on Saturday.
