The Axim Kundum Planning Committee has been supported with 20, 000 Ghana Cedis by Solmed Ghana Limited, a catering service provider to the Oil and Gas industry in the Western Region.

The amount is aimed at supporting girl child education at a community-based Girls’ Senior High School in the Axim area; whiles part of it is to assist in organizing Mock Exams to improve results at the Basic Education Certificate Examination and also provide educational materials for some basic schools.

The company, a member of Solmed Alliance, at the just ended Axim Kundum festival also donated 45 students’ mattresses; and fed about 300 children.

The Coordinating Secretary of the Axim Kundum Planning Committee, Isaac Kofi Bentil, who received the cheque on behalf of the chiefs and people of Axim, pledged that the amount will be used judiciously to improve education in the area.

The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs who doubles as the Paramount Chief of the Lower Axim Traditional Area, Awulae Attibrukusu the III, spearheaded the establishment of the Girls Senior High School, which was solely ran by the community until Government absorbed it in 2012.

He noted that the school which is the second girls’ high school in the Region needed to expand hence the establishment of a Foundation that could raise funds to support that course. As a result, the theme for the Kundum Festival in the last four years has focused on improving girl child education. Awulae Attibrukusu thus commended Solmed Ghana Limited for supporting girl child education by donating towards this year’s Kundum Festival.

“Part of this support will go into the provision of materials for all pupils at the basic level but about sixty percent of it will go into girl-child education because the Girls Secondary School will take more than half of it” he noted.

The Managing Director of Solmed Ghana Limited, Kevin Hall, said the gesture formed part of the company’s care philosophy which seeks to affect the lives of communities and people in their operational areas. He says although the company operates from Takoradi, it deemed it necessary to extend support to Axim in the area of education which they considered very crucial to the success of any people or community.

According to him, Solmed has in the last five years of its operations supported sporting organisations, healthcare, pediatric care and orphanages amounting to over 100,000 dollars, adding that the company will do more to bring relief to needy institutions and individuals in other parts of the Western Region.

In the case of education in Axim, Mr. Kevil Hall promised to sustain the support once the initial assistance produces satisfactory results.
