Navy hunt for kidnappers

By Emma Amaize, Warri
THE Nigerian Navy in Warri, Delta State, has launched a manhunt for the gunmen  , who shot and wounded a naval personnel on the waterways in Warri, Thursday,  while escaping into the creek with a man they kidnapped in Udu area of the state.

Navy spokesperson in Warri, C.I.D. Yohanna told Saturday Vanguard that the gunmen opened fire on naval personnel, who attempted to stop them.

He said the injured navy official was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but a source claimed the gunmen were sea pirates and not kidnappers.

Meanwhile, the national president of the Ijaw People Development Initiative, Comrade Austin Ozobo, on Thursday, condemned the attack on the navy and the resultant siege on the waterways by NNS, Delta.

His words, “While Ijaw riverine communities fault the attack on NNS, Delta by unidentified sea pirates in Warri River, we are unhappy at the restriction of movement in the waterways over armed robbers attack on the navy in Warri, as thousands of innocent  people were stranded from the morning of the incident to the evening hours” .

“My question is if it were on land that robbers attacked security agents, will they block the road or restrict movement from morning till evening the way they blocked the waterways as if other users do not have right to travel or conduct their business on the waterways”, he said.

Ozobo, an activist, said the rights of riverside dwellers should be respected, as an attack by criminals on navy officials was not an enough reason to embark on such a lawless act
