Johannesburg – Zwelakhe Sisulu, son of the late struggle veterans Walter and Albertina Sisulu, has died at the age of 61, the presidency said on Thursday.

“We have learnt with shock and sadness of the passing on of such a distinguished South African and patriot this morning,” it said in a statement.

“We are truly saddened by the loss, and extend our deepest condolences to the entire Sisulu family.”

The circumstances surrounding Sisulu’s death are unclear but Destiny magazine said it understood that he died in his sleep at his Greenside, Johannesburg, home.

His nephew, Shaka Sisulu, confirmed the news to the magazine.

Zwelakhe is the son of late ANC veterans Walter and Albertina Sisulu and the brother of Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Parliament Speaker Max Sisulu.

He worked for several news organisations, including the Rand Daily Mail and was founding editor of the New Nation newspaper.

Sisulu served as group CEO of the SABC from 1994 to 1997.
