Police in Garissa have recovered the two G3 rifles and 40 bullets that were taken away from Administration Police officers who were shot dead on Sunday evening. The guns were were hidden at a thicket near Ngamia road a few metres from where the murder was executed. The officers were on their way to NEP Girls Secondary School for their night guard duty.
According to a witness who sought anonymity, the two assailants were clad in robes when they were executing the murder. “I was busy walking towards my house on Ngamia Road when I heard gunshots. When I looked at where the sound was coming from, I saw two men wielding two G3 guns running to a thicket where they hid the riffles. I then shouted and arouse the residents’ attention. When we approached the place, the two officers lay lifeless. The two criminals had disappeared,” said the visibly-shaken woman.
Garissa deputy police boss Chemonges Ndiema said: “We have dismantled the two guns and our forensic experts are doing fingerprint tests to give us crucial leads into unearthing those who are behind this heinous attack.” Ndiema did not rule out the possibility of the embattled al Shabaab militias crossing the border and carrying out the retaliatory attacks after their last stronghold port of Kismayu was captured by KDF soldiers on Friday.
The incident led to panic in Garissa town as police imposed a curfew, prompting early closure of shops and other business premises. The police boss asked area residents to help the police in their investigation.
