Mother, 40 weeps as son admits guilt to theft

Kafanchan (Kaduna) – There was drama in court when Mrs Rafkatu Adamu, of Kafana Area in Kafanchan, Kaduna State on Wednesday wept in court, as her son, Joefrey Adamu, 26, pleaded guilty to theft.

The accused, of the same address was docked for alleged theft of iron rods belonging to the Nigeria Railway Corporation in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

Adamu who pleaded guilty to the charge told the court that he committed the offence because he needed money to feed himself.

He begged the court for leniency, adding, “I have never stolen in my life”.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Luke Obi, told the court that the accused was arrested on Aug. 24, following police investigation after the incident was reported.

He said that the offence was contrary to sections 95 and 96 of the Penal Code.

Mrs Rafkatu Adamu while testifying about her son’s character amidst tears, told the court that she was shocked when she learnt of her son’s behaviour, and said that Joefrey had no criminal record since he was a child.

She further told the court that as a primary school teacher, she made sure her children had the best upbringing and appropriate feeding.

Mrs Adamu pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy and pardon her son over the crime he had owned up to.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Sammy Daka, said the court would use its discretionary powers in its sentence since the accused had no criminal record, but would punish him to serve as deterrent to others.

Daka then sentenced the accused to two years imprisonment with an option of N20,000 fine and warned parents to guard against negligence and to observe activities of their wards. (NAN)
