A former diplomat has appealed to the security agencies to remain on the alert and guard against complacency as the nation edged towards the December 7, general polls.

Mr Alex N. Abankwa, former Ghana Ambassador to Canada, said they need to be professional, even-handed and firm in the performance of their duties adding that any laxity could be costly.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of a three-day training programme for 335 security personnel drawn from the police, the military, prisons, fire service, immigration and customs, excise and preventive service.

The goal of the program was to aid them to better perform their expected roles in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections and was instituted by Executive Diligence (ED) Limited and the Ghana Government with support from the British Government.

Mr Abankwa, who is the Executive Chairman of ED,  said “in recent times, elections have become a major flash point in most multi-party democratic processes,” adding that, Ghana had had some horrific incidents of election violence too.

He said “political power has become juicy in Africa to the extent that” the political parties and their followers are prepared to do everything just to gain power saying this is why the security officers should sit up help to protect the integrity of the elections by making sure they were held in a peaceful environment free from intimidation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kwasi Mensah Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander, asked the personnel to attach more importance to the training programme to help them to discharge their duties with efficiency.
