Egypt: Two Constitution Articles Threaten Freedom of Press – Assembly Spox

Constituent Assembly spokesman Wahid Abdel Meguid warned on Sunday against the danger two suggested articles in the chapter on freedoms in the constitution pose on the freedom of press.

The two articles threaten the freedom of press and may cost media workers their jobs if one journalist makes a mistake or commits a violation, Abdel Meguid said in a statement reported by the Middle East News Agency (MENA).

One of the articles prohibits annulling the legal articles which include imprisonment in opinion, publication and expression lawsuits in more than 30 articles in the legal penalties on journalists and their syndicate.

This means a group penalty will be inflicted in case of individual error, he explained.

The second article paves the way for suspending newspapers although the Egyptian law never contained an article allowing the suspension of newspapers, Abdel Meguid stated.
