Johannesburg – Roads leading into Gauteng experienced a peak in traffic as motorists and Zion Christian Church members headed back into the province on Sunday, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.

Spokesperson Ashref Ismail said about 2 200 cars were seen travelling from Limpopo to Pretoria on Sunday night.

“We’ve also seen hundreds of buses transporting ZCC members, but no fatal crashes have been reported,” he said.

Members of the Zion Christian Church were travelling from Polokwane following the annual September pilgrimage in Moria City.

He said traffic on the R101 and the R573 roads from Polokwane were experiencing high volumes of traffic.

Ismael said the N4 from Nelspruit was also congested, with about 1 200 vehicles heading towards Pretoria.

He urged motorists to maintain a safe following distance and to reduce speed.
