Hoodlums set late Controller-General of Prisons’ house ablaze •2 minors arrested •As deceased is buried amidst wailings

MORE tragedies befell the family of slain former Controller-General of Prisons, Alhaji Ibrahim Jarma, as some urchins, who were commissioned, set his guest house located on the Azare-Jama’are road ablaze on Tuesday evening, when the remains of the deceased were buried.

Hundreds of people converged on Azare, headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, to witness the burial of the late Controller-General of Prisons. It was a free flow of tears and wailings as the remains of the deceased were interred.

Jarma was shot on Monday night by two gunmen in front of his house, while coming from the mosque where he had gone to say his Isha’i prayer and died on Tuesday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching University (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, while receiving treatment.

Two of the urchins, whose ages ranged from eight to nine, were, however, arrested by the police and were said to be helping the police in identifying their sponsors.

A relative of the deceased, Mallam Ahmed Musa confirmed to journalists the burning of the guest house and the arrest of the two children in a telephone interview.

A top security source, however, told the Nigerian Tribune that the minors, who were arrested, said they were offered N20 each with a gallon of petrol to set the guest house ablaze, adding that one of them said he knew the house of the supposed sponsor.
Another source, who is based in Azare, stated that when the boys were arrested, they said it was their teacher who sent them to perpetrate the act, saying, however, that the Qura’nic teacher, who was an old man, had since absolved himself of the dastardly act.

According to the source, the teacher told the people that he never knew anything about the boys’ criminal act, which the source said he (the teacher) condemned in a very strong term.

Meanwhile, funeral prayer for the late Jarma was conducted at the Azare Central Mosque and was led by the Chief Imam of Azare, Alhaji Ayuba, who admonished people to move closer to Allah and always prepare for the ultimate end — death — which he said was compulsory for all mortals.

He described the death of the late Controller-General of Prisons, who he said was a man of God, a compassionate and kind man who helped people freely, as an act of Allah.

In his reaction, Governor Isa Yuguda, who was represented on the occasion by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Alhaji Yusuf Musa Gumli, stated that the late Jarma, who held the traditional title of Jarma of Katagum, was a true patriot, whose death would leave a vacuum not only in the state but also in the country, considering his sefless service to humanity.

The governor also prayed to Allah to give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.Share
