Ghana’s U20 women’s team will open their campaign in the FIFA U-20 World Cup against heavyweight US on Monday.

The game against the former World Champions will test the country’s readiness and confidence at Hiroshima.

The Ghanaians will take inspiration from West African rivals Nigeria which surpassed expectations to beat Korea 2-0 in their opening game on Sunday.

The Black Princesses were kicked out in the group phase of the competition two years ago in Germany but head coach Robert Sackey believes the desire and ambition of his young charges wil drive them to the knockout phase.

“Realistically speaking our first ambition is to get to the quarter-finals. If we manage that then of course we’ll be aiming for the trophy,” Sackey said

“No women’s team from Ghana has ever got beyond the group stages of a FIFA World Cup. “That’s got to be our priority,”

“All they need is the incentive to fly the Ghanaian flag high in Japan. I have complete faith that they’re up to that task.”
