About 28 persons were at the weekend, feared killed, while scores of others were still missing in a renewed rage of flood in nearly all the villages of the southern zone of Plateau State.
It was also gathered that more corpses were still been picked in villages around the affected areas in Langtang South, Langtang North, Shendam Mikang Wase and Quanpan local government areas of the state.
While about 100 communities and over 1,000 houses were affected by the flood, the bridges linking the area with Lafia in Nasarawa State and Taraba State were swept off by the flood.
A resident of Langtang, which was one of the affected areas, Mr. Kenneth Nandom, said: “Iced blocks were literarily falling on their roofs all through early hours of Sunday”, before their homes and farmlands were washed away.
Also, the Chairman of the Transition Committee of Shendam Local Government Area, which was also affected, Kemi Nshe, told journalists that 200 hectares of farmlands were also washed away by the flood in his local government council alone.
The chairman, who described the incident as sad, however, called on the people of the state to be calm and wait for relief which would come their way soonest.
On his part, the Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Victor lar, who led some journalists to assess the affected areas, described the incident as ugly and unfortunate, and assured the affected people that he would assist them.
Lar said he had never witnessed such a devastation, noting that the victims of the flood disaster were going through serious sufferings, adding that epidemic may break out in the area as a result of the displacement of about 1,500 people if urgent steps were not taken.
Lar also assured the people of the state that government both at federal and state levels would come to their aid.
He said he had contacted the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who had sent officials to access the level of destruction with a view to assisting the victims.
He said he had also sent about 30 bags of maize to some of the people.
On the swept bridge, Lar called on the Federal Government to come to their rescue in order to save the economy of the locality.
