Senegal stun hosts GB

Craig Bellamy

Hosts Great Britain had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Senegal in their opening match of the 2012 London Olympics players at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday.

Craig Bellamy had given the hosts a first-half lead, but Senegal continued creating chances and were rewarded nine minutes from time with an equaliser through Moussa Konate.

Great Britain were unhappy with the physicality of the Senegalese throughout the match and felt they should have had a penalty for a foul on Bellamy in the box late on.

The home team were ahead on 20 minutes as skipper Ryan Giggs floated a free-kick into the box, which was only headed as far as Bellamy and his Welsh compatriot blasted the ball home from 12 yards.

Senegal should have equalized when Great Britain goalkeeper Jack Butland’s clearance only reached Sadio Mane on the edge of the area, but he chipped the ball wide of goal.

But the goal their play deserved duly arrived on 81 minutes a brilliant defence-splitting pass found Konate, and he coolly finished past Butland.
