Johannesburg – Newly-elected African Union Commission chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has wished former president Nelson Mandela a happy 94th birthday, the Department of Home Affairs said.

Dlamini Zuma was sworn in as chairperson of the AU commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, early on Tuesday morning, department spokesperson Bushy Sekhu said in a statement.

She had since returned to South Africa from the AU’s two-day 19th Ordinary Session of heads of state and government.

Despite her new appointment, President Jacob Zuma said Dlamini Zuma would remain minister of home affairs for the time being.

“She remains minister until all the requirements and processes related to the assumption of her new position as AU Commission chairperson have been completed,” the presidency said. – Sapa
