Ghana midfielder star Michael Essien invited a host of his friends to commission a multi-ultra playing ground for kids at his native Ewutu in Ghana on Thursday.
The Chelsea ace joined hundreds of enthusiastic locals who came out in their numbers to welcome the man who won the Uefa Champions League with the Blues last month.
The move was under the auspices of the Michael Essien Foundation which seeks to provide basic necessities and medical care for underprivileged youth in Ghana.
He was joined by former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and Belgium-based Rahim Ayew as they watched the kids play on the facility at the St Kilian Basic School – which happens to be the former Basic school of the 29-year-old.
“I am happy the kids about the completion of the facility which I believe will inure to the benefit of the kids,” Essien told GHANAsoccernet.com
“If the kids are happy, then I am also happy. This is our little contribution to our junior borthers and sisters. We should all do something to make their lives better,”
It will be recalled that the Foundation sent two Ghanaian kids Bismark Mensah and Jonathan Kwofie on a three-day visit of Chelsea Football Club in London in 2010.
Also present at the occasion was the Chief Executive of the Foundation, Mike Gizo.
