Polytechnic students threaten to hit streets over POTAG strike

Students of Kumasi Polytechnic say they will demonstrate on Friday if the impasse between striking polytechnic teachers and the Fair Wages Commission over the single spine is not resolved.

The students had hoped their teachers would make concessions to invigilate examinations which were scheduled to begin Wednesday.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Representative Council, they are waiting for a 72-hour ultimatum given to government by their parent body, Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students to elapse before they carry out their threat.

He added that notifications have been given to the police about the intended demonstration and also a petition has been forwarded to government through the Ashanti regional minister.

According to the PRO, although they have not taken sides, they expect to get the money-value for the tuition fees they paid.

Meanwhile officials of the National Security apparatus have been meeting rectors of the polytechnics on Wednesday in an attempt to explore lasting ways of resolving the strike declared by POTAG.
