In an interview with a new publication, Danfo Express, Charly Boy declared that he is gay and not ashamed of being gay.
Even as he made other disclosures about himself, he didn’t forget to add that he is the head of the Illuminati in Nigeria, the same Illuminati that people accuse Jay-Z, D’Banj and Don Jazzy of being members and they keep denying membership. While his audacious revelations might seem like a publicity stunt on his part, let’s not forget the popular saying ‘there’s no smoke with-out fire’. Kudos to Charlie Boy if he is actually gay and bold enough to come out. I wonder how his family is taking it. But his action is a demonstration of highest level of honesty even at not a convenient time and space. Nigeria have a lot to learn from the openly gay fellow Nigerians. Ours is a country that denies and hushes down truth when we think it is not convenient. We extend the umbrella of self-deceit and secrecy over all topics and we can hardly solve any problem because we hardly talk about them. If he says he is gay, I will not doubt his claim. Rather, I admire his courage and honesty in a country where people have lost sense for truthfulness and integrity.
The openly gay men and women Nigerians call each of you to openness and honesty. Kudos to Charlie and thanks for being the oldest openly gay Nigerian now.
That said:
Being gay does not mean you cannot sleep with women and have children. In a very homophobic environment like Nigeria, gay guys and girls do enter into heterosexual marriages to avoid societal pressure. Hence some of our fathers and mothers, uncles and aunties and some of us running our mouth like bad tap on this page are gay but are forced to live in denial
Secondly, it is grammatically wrong to say a person is “a gay”. Simply say he is gay as you would say a person is white or black. You can however say he is “a gay man” as you would say he is a white/black man. White and gay are adjective. ok. (I believe grammer people can enlighten you further on this.)
Third point: I read somewhere on this same topic that Jide McCauley was the first Nigerian to openly declare he is gay. That is not right. However, he was the first gay pastor to open a house of prayer for the Nigerian gay community in Nigeria and even anywhere in the world (for Nigerian Gay Community). By that single, holy and daring act, he further the great work of giving face to homosexual Nigerians which Bisi Alimi started at the invitation of “Funmi Iyanda’s New Dawn talk show on the Nigerian Television Authority (some years before Jide moved to Nigeria) and it was here that he (Bisi Alimi) publicly came out before the nation and asked for acceptance from the public. He was named the face of gay that same year during the HIV/AIDS day.
Both guys are men of honor before God and reasonable human being. They are source of inspiration we all need to follow when it comes to disclosing and discussing issue no matter how difficult it may seem. Let us transcend the culture of Shame that turns us to liars.
