Kristen Stewart epitomises the face every teenage tomboy pulls when their mother makes them wear a dress.

The Twilight actress looked a little uncomfortable at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual ball last night, remaining in her gown for less time than it takes to say ‘Bite me, Edward’.

The 22-year-old harped back to the Eighties in her Balenciaga dress by Nicolas Ghesquiere, complete with a strapless snakeskin bodice and colour-block panels on the skirt.

Kristen polished off the look with some rather bizarre white strapped shoes that resembled bandaged feet.

However, obviously uncomfortable with
her wardrobe choice, the young actress was later spotted in her trusty
jeans and black leather jacket as she headed for the aftershow.

However, she wasn’t alone in her unusual choice of outfit.

Elizabeth Banks threatened to top the list in a kooky Mary Katrantzou dress.

The metallic gown had a flared centre piece which unfortunately for The Hunger Games actress, resembled a lampshade floating around her middle.

Meanwhile, Christina Ricci ended up looking like a Christmas present, all wrapped up in a giant bow.

Though her pale pink and black Thakoon number fit her like a glove, the huge fanned shoulder overpowered her tiny frame.

At least her Tiffany & Co. jewels and simple black patent heels added a bit of conservative drama to the ensemble.

Meanwhile, although they deserve credit for straying from the norm, Eva Mendes and Kirsten Dunst made the ultimate fashion faux pas by clashing with the red carpet.

The girls opted for a tangerine dream which ended in a nightmare.

Training Day beauty Eva appeared to have stumbled on the last dress in the shop with her unflattering large beaded bustier which did little to accentuate her exotic looks.

And The Virgin Suicides star Kirsten looked far older than her 30 years in old school styling.

Boy Don’t Cry star Chloe Sevigny bravely tried a quirky mirrored dress with silver pirate shoes, but perhaps should have stuck with the more traditional LBD.

Her black underwear was peeping
through, although the kooky outfit was in contrast to her very basic
hairstyling and lack of make-up.

Granny chic obsessive Mary-Kate Olsen also rocked an all-black ensemble, but typically her look was rather unconventional.

The Californian covered every inch of skin as she appeared to have been wrapped up in satin duvet sheets.

The usually-stylish Sarah Jessica
Parker would have left alter ego Carrie Bradshaw crying into her
Starbucks as she arrived in what can only be described as a curtain.

And even British trendsetter Alexa Chung failed to impress in a Marc Jacobs leather bin liner.

Model Chanel Iman appeared to have taken inspiration from Bjork’s infamous swan dress, slipping into a white feathered garment which unfortunately detracted from her beautiful face.

Florence Welch proved she is no shrinking violet as she practically needed a red carpet of her own.

The flame-haired singer opted for a
giant Alexander McQueen snowflake ensemble, which would have looked more
at home on the set of Muriel’s Wedding than the elite Schiaparelli and Prada ‘Impossible Conversations’ Costume Institute Gala in New York City.

At least the Howl songbird had people talking – which model Coco Rocha and M.I.A. managed too.

The girls appeared to have been left behind in the Eighties with garish out-of-date looks.
