Crucial week for German champs

Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund will enter this tough week of league football knowing that any slip up might have serious consequences on their aspirations of defending their league title.

The defending league champions face second-placed and title hunting rivals Bayern Munich at home on Wednesday night and then visit third placed Schalke 04 on the weekend.

Of these two mouth-watering clashes, Dortmund are targeting the home clash against Bayern as the match to win.

Speaking after the 3-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg this past Saturday afternoon,  Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has stated that if his side beat Bayern on Wednesday, the champions will not let the Bundesliga title slip away.

“If we win, I do not think they can take the title from us,” he told Bild.

“If we lose, we are tied. A preliminary decision [on the eventual winners] is thus ready to fall in our favour.”

Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp added that he wants the game to be a spectacle for the home team’s fans.

“The three points are there to pick up, which is what we want. In any case, we want to offer the 80,000 fans a spectacle,” he stated.

Dortmund’s fixtures this week: Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich at 20h00 on Wednesday & Schalke v Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at 15h30. All times CAT.
