Oshiomhole hails judiciary for sustaining democracy

By GABRIEL ENOGHOLASE
BENIN—EDO State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday, commended the nation’s judiciary for its role in sustaining democracy in the country.

He said Nigerians were still looking up to the judiciary to correct the imperfections within the system.

Oshiomhole, who spoke in Benin while swearing in two newly-appointed judges into the State Judiciary, Justices James Oyomire and Stephen Omonua, noted that democracy was still on course  in the country because of the roles played by the judiciary to panel- beat it into order.

He said if merit was compromised in appointments into political offices, appointments into judicial offices must be on merit and not on who one knows.

Congratulating the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, on his leadership style, which he noted gave rise to the appointment of the two new judges, Oshiomhole said as a beneficiary of the judicial system, he would ensure that a conducive atmosphere was created for the judiciary to operate in the state.

He said: “We will continue to create conducive atmosphere and encourage our judicial officers within the resources at our disposal. We have never interfered in the affairs of the judiciary and we will never do so.

“Even when the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice was detained on the order of a Federal High Court judge, we were never in a position to intervene and our intervention would not have made any difference,” he said.

He prayed God to give the new judges the wisdom, good health and understanding to dispense justice on all cases before their courts, no matter who was affected.

Responding on behalf of his colleague, Justice James Oyomire thanked the governor and the Chief Judge for finding them worthy of the appointments.

He said with their appointments, there was still light in the dark tunnel for those who might have been forgotten and urged such people to work hard and eschew idleness in their career.

He pledged to work with zeal to justify the confidence reposed in them by the government.
