PORT HARCOURT – Rivers State Governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi has said people of the state would continue to recognise and appreciate contributions of Justice Adolphus Karibi -Whyte (rtd) to the state’s development.
Governor Amaechi stated this, weekend, during a dinner at Government House, Port Harcourt, to celebrate the 80th birthday of the retired Supreme Court Justice.
The governor said: “Rivers State will continue to recognise you as a very important citizen for your contributions to the state and country. We know the contributions you had made to Rivers State.”
Amaechi noted that although Justice Karibi-Whyte was now retired, the state would always require his excellent contributions, adding that it was what informed his decision to appoint him pro-chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST.
He said: “We were talking about the retirement of judges and we said most of you who retire are still contributing to the development of the judiciary,” stressing that the knowledge of retired judges needed to be tapped for overall development.
Amaechi said: “That was why I thought that the best place to accommodate Justice Karibi-Whyte would be back in the university. By doing that, he has time to read, write and teach without having to go to classroom and even supervise management to ensure that things are done properly.”
In his remark, Karibi-Whyte thanked the government and all well wishers for organising the event in his honour.
The jurist condemned sycophancy in government, noting that what had kept him going through life were simplicity and purity of thought.
