A 61-year-old woman was raped and stabbed by a man who also burnt her house in Lwandlana Locality in Mthatha on Friday, Eastern Cape police said.
She was asleep in her house when the man broke open the door and got in around 2am, Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.
“The man raped the woman and stabbed her several times in the upper body. He then set her house alight and ran away.”
Neighbours used buckets of water to extinguish the flames. The woman was taken to a local hospital in a serious condition.
The motive for the crime was not immediately clear, but the man is known to the woman, Fatyela said.
Dockets of rape, attempted murder and arson were opened. The man was still being sought. – Sapa
