Igbo language films take centre stage @ Awka

    The stage is set for the rebirth of Igbo language films as a  group known as the Igbo Film Forum concludes plans to hold the inaugural edition of Igbo premier film festival, on Saturday, December 11, at  Suncity Exclusive hotel, Awka, Anambra State.

    The festival, according  to the president of the forum, Mr Harris Chuma remains one of the efforts by stakeholders of Igbo extraction  to promote Igbo language movies and to also celebrate film makers from the region who work in front of the cameras as well as behind the scenes.

    Harris decried the negligence of Igbo language films in recent times, stating the festival will screen more than ten Igbo language films.

    He also disclosed that the festival, which runs for three days will draw participation from across the globe.

    “This festival will focus on addressing the issue of fallen Igbo Language and the need for Igbo filmmakers to embrace the new direction; the Igbo language film and drama as a means of communication.”Harris said.

    Adding, he said the “festival of Igbo language movies will x-ray and encourage Igbo film makers at home and Diaspora in the creation and distribution of the millions of dollars worth of indigenous film industry into one of the most vibrant and dynamic in country.”

    In a statement made available to Sunday Entertainment,  the organisers said festival will feature series of events including  premieres,  screenings, award ceremonies, seminars, cultural dance competition and, of course, Nollywood house parties and ladies talent hunt show amongst others.

    Cultural displays and dances will kick-start the festival at the opening ceremony.

    According to the organisers, awards  will be given in several categories including Feature, Documentary, and Short Film, Acting and Directing, and the most prestigious Nollywood ambassadors awards and Nollywood recognition award.

    The Grand jury prize will be presented to the best film in competition as selected by a jury of industry professionals,and the Award for the Best Igbo Language Filmmaker.

    Some of those that will be honoured at the event include, Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, Comrade Jude Ezenwafor, Professor Ezenwafor, Professor Pita Ejifor, Hon. Emeka Anohu, Azuh Arinze, Benjamin Njoku and Shauibu Hussien amongst others.
