THE Federal Government has established an Avian Influenza Intensive Care Unit (treatment centre) at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, at the weekend in Abuja also received two mobile clinic vehicles presented by Hyundai, a Korean motor company, to boost healthcare delivery at the National and Gwagwalada Hospitals.
The respiratory unit built by the Avian Influenza Control Project (Human Health Component) with the support of the World Bank is a response initiative, which the government instituted following the occurrence of the infection in Nigeria in January 2006.
Chukwu said at the commissioning of the centre that the complication of the Avian influenza and other viruses, is respiratory distress.

He stated: “It is, therefore, necessary to address the issue of treatment of this complication and it is not just limited to diagnosis alone.
“The essence is to give prompt and quality care to this critical group of patients that require specialist attention. It will serve as a form of barrier nursing that will limit transmission of the infection to other patients, health workers and the community at large”.

The Ambassador of Republic of Korea in Nigeria, Park Young-Kuk, commended Hyundai Motors for the donation and acknowledged the role of the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, which he said, will ensure follow-up training by its team of doctors and engineers for the vehicles’ maintenance.
“Korea is not only eager to donate vehicles but also to share its own unique development experience with Nigeria. That is why I am happy to see participation from Korean private sector in development cooperation.
“Korea regards Nigeria as one of the most important partners in the African region in many fields, including trade, energy and development cooperation”, Young-Kuk said.

Deputy General Manager, Hyundai Motors, Cha Deug Yong, said the mobile vehicle initiative, which is meant for internal medicine and digital x-ray for general mobile clinic service, is in line with the organisation’s social responsibility to the community where it operates.
