1st solar-powered laboratory commissioned

    Nsukka – Nigeria’s first solar energy laboratory capable of supplying uninterrupted power for 360 days for five years has been installed and commissioned at St. Cyprian’s Special Science School, Onitsha,  to power its two science laboratories.

    The solar energy laboratory is a pilot project of lighting Nigeria by a team from The Netherlands, which is first of its kind among high schools in Nigeria, and tertiary institutions in sub-Saharan West Africa.

    At the event, Vice- Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Bartho Okolo, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) Prof. Isaac Asazu, said the pilot project of the solar energy was one of the benefits of an  agreement between University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Delft University of Technology in , The Netherlands.

    Prof. Asuzu said University of Nigeria played host to experts from The Netherlands on sustainable energy at high schools to improve on the standard of education in the country, stressing that the institution had seen the picture of benefits in Nigeria and Netherlands university relations

    The deputy vice chancellor added that the choice of St. Cyprian Special  Science School for lighting the project  was  considered on security and managerial ability to enable the installation live for five years before the batteries could be changed and urged the school management to guard against
