MIAMI (AP)—Paul Pierce(notes) says he was surprised to be ejected from Game 1 of Boston’s Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Miami Heat.

A day later, he vowed to do a better job keeping his composure. And if the Celtics are going to even this series, coach Doc Rivers says they have to do better in other areas as well.

Miami won an emotionally charged series-opener 99-90 on Sunday, finishing it off after Pierce was ejected for picking up two quick technical fouls in the fourth quarter. The Heat say they know Game 2 will be difficult, noting that history shows the Celtics have plenty of ability to win playoff games on the road.

    Game 2 is Tuesday night.
