The tournament doubles as Africa’s qualifiers for the U17 World Cup

Rwanda are the hosts of the 2011 African Under-17 Championship, which also features Burkina Faso, Senegal, Egypt, The Gambia, Congo Brazzaville, Ivory Coast and Mali.

The Gambia are the reigning African champions, having won the continental title in Algeria in 2009. The semi-finalists from this tournament will also qualify for the U17 World Cup in Mexico later in the year.
