Pregnant woman dies in stabbing

A pregnant woman in her early 20s has been stabbed to death in a “completely random” street attack, police say.

Humberside police were called to reports of a serious assault in Victoria Street South, Grimsby, just before 1600 BST on Sunday.

The woman, who was from the town, was taken to the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, but died from her injuries.

A 53-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the incident and police are appealing for witnesses.

Det Supt Christine Kelk said the woman had been stabbed in the back by a man she did not know, who had been following her.

‘Tragic’

“The tragic thing about this is that it was completely random,” she said.

“She was walking to work locally on her own at the time.”

Det Supt Kelk said it was raining heavily at the time of the attack and the area was likely to have been “fairly quiet”.

But she added: “Some members of the public were nearby at the time. Some tried to give her first aid and some went after the man.”

Forensics officers have examined the scene and a post-mortem examination will take place on Monday.
