Tragedy hit two educational institutions when three of their students died in two separate incidents over the weekend.

In the first tragedy, a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi,  Abdul Fataaw Seidu, died while participating in the ongoing Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) last Saturday.

He was said to have fallen on the field on the university campus and all efforts to revive him proved futile.

In the other incident, two second-year Visual Arts students of the Ada Senior High School, who allegedly sneaked out of school to have fun at the beach, drowned when they attempted to swim after playing a football match.

The two, identified as Prince Duodu and Prince Lamptey, were among five students who left the school to play football at a beach close to the school.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Ada District Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

  Gloom over the games
Speaking to the Daily Graphic on the incident at the GUSA Games, the President of GUSA, Dr Joseph Kwesi Ogah, said Seidu’s family was immediately contacted, and arrangements were made to bury him at Pokuase last Friday in accordance with Islam tradition.

Some of the students said the incident had cast a gloomy blanket on the games.

Dr Ogah said a proposal would be made to the Executive Committee of GUSA to consider naming the trophy at stake in the handball competition after Seidu.

He said competitive sports promoted excellence and led to a balanced development of body, spirit and mind.
